Cut and dry, on Sept. 17 Senators voted 73-25 to allocate money for transportation, housing and urban development until October 2010. The clock is ticking, for the current fiscal year expires on Oct.1.
Figure it out, the bill includes allowing a pilot program to exempt Maine's Interstate highway system from the current federal truck weight limit. Currently, trucks weighing up to 100,000 pounds can use Interstate 95, designated as the Main Turnpike and running from the Main New Hampshire border to Augusta. But the Maine Turnpike designation ends at Augusta. I-95 proceeds another 200 miles north to Houlton, so heavy truck drivers are forced onto secondary roads. Now in just one fell swoop, these truckers forced onto secondary roads could possibly be fined.
All in due time, the bill's Senate report on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration notes safety has been improved, but much still needs to be done in this area and in oversight. Fast Cars & Speeders---How They Got Spanked...Plus They Are Glutton For Punishment...
If an idiot like me can say no to speeding and help prevent accidents, then I'm betting you can too...
Say what you will, but speeding is the cause of 30 percent of all traffic deaths in the United States, about 13,000 people a year. My suggestion is don't throw gasoline on the fire; quit building cars that can exceed the speed limit.
To pull the wool over our eyes, most cars can do over 100 miles an hour- an illegal speed in most states. The deliberate production of potentially lawbreaking vehicles is only a wolf in sheep's clothing. Think about this, the government has all sorts of regulations to decrease danger to the public, from baby cribs to bicycle helmets. Yet the spending continues to produce fast cars despite the lives lost, and it makes my blood boil when I think of the money spent on accident victims.
Despite all the lives lost, we insist on the right to speed. To put a nail in the coffin of speeders, how about if we use passes to monitor each car entering government erected toll booths and exiting another. By doing some basic math the calculations could show you to be a speeder, the authorities would send you a traffic ticket. Lives money and oil would be saved and the proof would be undeniable. But building cars that can't exceed the speed limit may be the best approach. Kporchhaulling

The law clearly states that the license "shall" be in the drivers immediate possession. Jump on the bandwagon with South Carolina and the rest of the nation. To make a long story short, there's a nationwide effort to prevent accidents when crossing the railroad across the state.
Officials from the state Department of Public Safety and the CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads, on Wednesday got on the cutting edge, by joining representatives of Operation Lifesaver for a series of news conferences across the state.
Operation Lifesaver is a nationwide public information program to reduce collisions, injuries and fatalities at highway-rail crossings.

Congress Is Out Of Gas & Car Companies Must Hit The Road With The Energy Bill...
I have just finished reading an article by one of the greatest writers at the Washington Post, and I have some news for you about what's going on in Washington.
Cash is king---the Bush administration didn't issue fuel economy standards before leaving Washington. I don't understand why... we are digging ourselves into a hole at the gas pumps.
The clock is ticking, the Obama administration now has a free hand to set its own standards that will save consumers money at the pump, reduce oil dependency and greenhouse gases, plus make American car companies more competitive.
Thank goodness, the 2007 energy bill required new cars and trucks to meet a fleetwide average of 35 miles per gallon by 2020, a 40 percent increase over today's average of 25 m.p.g. What's more congress intended this as a floor, not a ceiling, and ordered the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to write specific regulations.
Under the gun, last may, as part of these regulations, the agency set an interim fleetwide standard of 31.6 m.p.g. by 2015. The new standard, was right on the button, it pushed the car makers more than halfway to the 2020 goal. Automakers being tried and true have suggested they can meet these arduous goals with ease. Much to my surprise studies have said they can do even better---at least as high as 35 m.p.g. by 2015, and 40 m.p.g. by 2020, with no changes in current technology.
Getting their ducks in a row, General Motors and Ford provided production plans to congress last year to show they would make more fuel-efficient cars. To get the ball rolling, the Obama administration should make such vehicles a condition of any future help. No matter what Detroit does, the new administration must set much tougher fuel-economy standards. Kporchhaulling

Sometimes drivers pull straight into an intersection knowing they will not be able to move or clear the intersection at all, due to traffic backups ahead of them. These traffic tie-ups can be prevented if drivers will try to look ahead and not pull forward into intersections when the traffic congestion ahead of them will not allow them to make it all the way through the intersection. It's back to the drawing board, the federal government announced that one million Evenflo Discovery child seats were being recalled, because they could come apart in a side-impact crash. It was like fall through the cracks politics, the government insisted on a recall even though there is no standard that specifics, how well such seats must protect children in a side crash.
Is this an emotional roller coaster? Clarence Ditlow, the executive director of the Center for Auto Safety for 32 years, said a recall under these circumstances was rare, if not unprecedented. The problem was discovered only because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, had been working on developing side-impact regulations and had conducted some child seat tests as part of that research.
It's an eight hundred pound (800 lb) gorilla type of problem. The problem with Evenflo was so serious, the agency said, even in the absence of standards, the recall was urgent.
A glimmer of hope, the agency has begun working on side-impact standards more actively after the Takata Corporation of Tokyo, which makes occupant restraints like air bags, told he agency that the company had developed a test for child restraints in side-impact crashes.

It's no joke, the insurance group favors renewed pressure on drivers to buckle up, drive sober and stop speeding.
Responding to the implicit criticism that federal, state and local government were not doing enough to improve safety, Rae Tyson, a spokesman for the traffic safety agency, acknowledge, "There's no question that safety improvements, either those mandated by the government or installed by the manufacturers voluntarily, have contributed to a pretty steady decline in the fatality rate." But he added, "The increase in belt use has also had a significant impact on fatality reductions."
The agency says each increase of one percent point in belt use saves some 270 lives a year. But if history repeats itself; while belt use may continue to grow, other factors can work against safety.Kporchhaulling.

But get this; data from the National Highway traffic Safety Administration showed a decline in deaths of 14 percent in New England.
Say what you will, but the rise in gasoline prices last year, I'll assume is why the overall decline, because people ended up driving less. The number of vehicle miles traveled dropped by about 3.6 percent nationally, the safety agency found, after climbing for several decades.

Read This Or Be Ignorant --- About Good Drivers...
I hope you have the courage to read this blur; see if you qualify to be a good driver.
Are there any good drivers? I was backing into a space with my tractor-trailer rig today, when along came a man driving his four-wheeler. He just pulled up and glared at me. As a driver, I was sure he was accident prone, the man was impatient which equals to strike #1. My first thought was of those poor people's safety in his vehicle. I don't understand why people even try to drive if they can't pay attention, the man had other options available, but he wanted to challenge my large truck. A bad driver can cause you to have an accident; even if you're a good driver.
Take it from me there are many types of bad drivers. Like a bull in a China shop there's the teenage drivers. They are nervous and scared, or on the other hand many are overzealous.
Another type of driver is like my before mentioned friend, the impatient workaholics. These drivers are alway in a hurry and definitely multi-task. These people have no patience for driving at all, they never consider their fellow drivers. Steer clear of these types of people if you want to avoid dents in your vehlicle.
The last hurrah for the soccer-mom, car-pool types. They pile as many passengers into the car or minivan as possible, whether it's to go to school or a sporting event. It's not safe to pile up in your car without enough seat belts. I know the money and time saved is nothing to sneeze at, but these people take carpoolling to the extreme.
It's a no brainer, many older people should not be driving. They drive slowly, and many tend to weave. It makes you wonder how some people passed the driving test.
And I think my lucky stars for the good drivers out there. You always wear your seat belts, use turn signals, drive the speed limit, and never attempt to multi-task while driving. Maybe one day the good will outnumber the bad. Waiting for the other shoe to drop, kporchhaulling.

I have just finished reading an article by an upstate NY news reporter on road rage. And I like to share this insight to help in coping with road rage.
First things first, we don't know who is in the car beside us, behind us, or ahead of us. Like asleep at the wheel, we just drive. And we cut them off, and they cut us off. Anthing goes; it doesn't matter where they were born, if they have children, or if they are truck drivers, teachers, clerks or criminals. And somethimes all hell breaks loose, the game becomes dangerous, fatal, and someone causes an accident on purpose.
Bet your bottom dollar, if someone is having a bad day, they will be wiser to stay home. There are many people these days having bad days on the road, creating road rage. There are too many senseless accidents, and too many deaths.
Call the shots, and remember when you're behind the wheel, your life is important, and also everyone else around you. Plus, any mental breakdown, any mental mistake could place you and them in danger.

First things first, driving over-the-road is a fine way to make a living. And the truth is, you can make a respectable wage driving from state to state and have a lot of fun in the process. And you don't have to drive a "big rig" (like I do) to enjoy this type of work. It's no secret that many companies will hire you as a "freight expediter" and all you need is a cargo van. You can work just about every day if you choose to; or only take four or five runs a week. What's more, driving over-the-road offers you a great way to see parts of the country you might not ever have time to visit.
Its a no brainer, expediting freight simply means that all pick ups and deliveries are time sensitive. This means that as long as you are active and on call, you might get a pick up offer at anytime of the day or night. The long and short of it, as an expediter, you would pick up your freight at a certain time and be expected to deliver it by a specific time. Test the waters, the run might be only 40 or 50 miles or 600 to 700 miles. The pick up load could be a document size envelope, small box, or a few crates of heavy parts. It's a sweet deal, after you complete your run, you have the freedom to go back on call or spend some leisure time.

As a truck driver, I have a love for the open road and a knack for finding great places to visit. One such place which I have read about gives me a craving to visit, whether I'm working or vacationing, is the Stone Mountain State Park.
This park will kick your love for the outdoors into high gear, you'll find everything from water falls to dirt roads all on more than 14,100 acres.
Sure we are lovers of the highway, but with no knowledge of great places to visit, it is highway robbery.
It gets even better, this park is a fisherman's paradise, creeks are stocked with trout, rainbows, browns, and brookies.

Ok Buck-a-roos, get out your hiking boots. Located 12 miles southwest of Bryson City and carved by the Nantahala River, this eight-mile gorge takes its name from a Cherokee word meaning " land of the noondays sun." The canyon is so deep and narrow that only when the sun is directly overhead can its rays reach the bottom of the gorge.
Beauty cuts to the core, the gorge burrows down about 1,8000 feet at its deepest and is less than 100 yards wide at its narrowest. You'll be a happy camper, because there is easy access to the access to the Appalachian Trail, which crosses the eastern end of the gorge.
Plus you'll find recreational opportunities. It's the real mccoy: water released from the Ducke Energy dam several of miles upriver rushes down the gorge for about 12 hours most days, creating an ideal run for whitewater rafting.
Play with the big boys: you may rent raft, canoes and kayaks. While the trip is exhilarating it's not overly challenging for novices. Because I love to stop and smell the roses; I was thrilled to find the picnic areas are maintained, and the river is stocked with trout. Warning: Ashiville will capture your heart...
Do you know there are still some people who do not know that Ashvill, N.C., is where the biggest private home in America is?
Knock your socks off; well mine also. I visited this city while travelling over-the-road, driver of a big rig (as I am today). Be certain of this, you have never, ever been to a city like Ashiville before.
So I did some research on Ashville (http://www.washingtonpost.com/). Here's an example of what you'll find.
In Ashville music is everywhere. From church bells and buskers to pipe organs and drum circles, the city's pulse is music. On a warm summer night, you'll hear drums from blocks away, hands slapping djembes, the ching-ca-ching of tambourines, the dong-dong of a cowbell, plus the sound of many hands clapping. It's all part of the eight-year old Friday night drum circle that takes place in Pritchard Park, a little landscape triangle in the middle of this western North Carolina city.
On brick steps and boulders ringing the park, silver-haired matrons in preppy knits, young Rastafarians in dreadlocks, also elderly Asian ladies sat. Such a gatherilng is like a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. In the center of the park, you'll see drummers on huge kettle drums, and others sharring congas or passing around beaded gourds, wooden blocks and bells. And there's more, you'll see dancers twirling, swaying and bouncing in the warm summer breeze.
Most visitors to Ashville; aren't there for the music. Long and short of it, roughly half of the city's 2 million yearly visitors come to see the biggest private home in America, George Vanderbilt's palatial Biltmore estate.
The 1895 mansion and grounds are part of the Vanderbilt family's fortune. Architect Richard Morris Hunt and Fredrick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect whose design of Central Park in New York, transformed 125,000 acre of N.C. countryside into lush gardens and managed forest, 8,000 acres of which are still Biltmore property. The house alone---with 250 rooms, including 34 bedrooms and 43 bathrooms--- has four acres of floor space, much of which is open to the public for a hefty admission price ($55). Kporchhaulling.

"Why I Fell In Love With Local Roads"
Puddles of moonlight on an asphalt-paved nebulous highway, weeds and grass dancing in the breeze as I sailed by on a hot summer's afternoon. I fell in love with these things while travelling the local roads of NC. in my youth. Even now memories of that long-ago love brings an unbidden smile.
Though I'm a wanderer by nature, like on an emotional roller coaster I continue to return to my first love. While it's true some things about local roads never change like true value, progress likes to keep us guessing.

Thank goodness, during the 1990s, lawmakers decided to channel more money into the nation's highways and bridges, and the policy has now begun to pay off with better pavement, improved bridges, and higher levels of safety.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure: in recent years the highway transportation system through the FHWA, sends a Conditions and Performance Report to congress. The record highway funding levels, authorized by ISTEA in 1991 are being felt throughout the system. More construction funding has produced pavements that are generally better, especially in rural areas, with fewer deficient bridges.
The percentage of "poor pavement" on rural interstate highways has been cut from 5.7 percent to 3.7 percent since the 1997 report. Almost three-fourths of the highway investment backlog is in urban areas... kporchhaulling.
Safety tip of the day: drivers that are in too big of a hurry sometimes avoid the traffic signals at intersections by cutting across a private lot to avoid a red signal light. Secrets For Travel Enjoyment
As for me travelling by motor vehicle is my choice for enjoying travels. Why? Cut and dry, I feel if I'm traveling for enjoyment I should say how fast or slow my speed is. And if you enjoy viewing the scenery... (like I do) put the pedal to the metal... automobiles are perfect for sight-seeing and a reasonable way to view the scenery.
Put your heart into it, make sure you get a map. A good road map can be your best friend. Take the time to study your map and mark your current location and destination. What's more, make sure you choose a motorist's map for the additional information it provides. Lood at the route you want to take, and alternative routes in case of emergencies. Quit playing around, and check for local accomodations, gas stations, restaurant, hospitals, and clinics along the way---so you can plan your trip according to what your needs may be.
Don't pull any stunts, have your car checked out before departing. It would be a let down if your vehicle didn't make the entire trip. So make sure your car is in good running condition before leaving home.
And there's more, don't go on a forever trip, stop and check your bearings, know your exact location. Bring a GPRS if you have one.
Not every destination will have an ATM or bank. Perhaps not large bill but just cash on hand may be all that'll be necessary... mostly loose change and small bills. In case you find a hotel or restaurant that will only take csh, or if you need to use a phone booth--- in some areas a mobile phone want work.

Enjoy Travelling? Use Travelling Accessories...
If you have travelling principles; or an inherent nature for order and neatness. I urge you to pause a moment and consider your travel accessories.
Instead of chaos, with accessories and putting all your items in order, your perception will change, you'll begin to notice your car as a transporting vehicle. Instead of clutter, when you enter your vehicle neatness will make you very comfortable, as the lightness of being fills and relaxes you. What will travel accessories do for your perception? When you are travelling and being constantly surrounded by clutter and chaos, your mind will likely give you impressions of wild-open areas, soon you may just see your surroundings as a crackly-looking dark mass of interwining material. Now with the order from using accessories and neatly storing items--- you'll have a perspective of shimmering transparent areas and your perception will become more lucid. Once you have control of the space in your vehicle... (I have experienced this) you'll have an edge in everything you do; only then can you safely drive at a peek level without distrations.

I have no bones about the offense of exceeding the speed limit was created to improve road safety and to offer guidance to all drivers; however, I didn't just fall off the turnip truck--- speed limits are by their very nature argumentable. Holy cow, most drivers can perceive what a safe speed is anyway--- this concept is called the 85th percentile rule. This rule states that 85% of drivers will drive at similar speeds due to their judgement; with approximately 15% of people being unable to judge what speed they should travel at. That 15% creates a good argument for the enforcement of speed limits... that's for the birds.
Due to the increasing number of speed cameras; many drivers have resorted to using Speed Camera Detectors to avoid getting caught. Which is a sweetheart of a deal, not because drivers want to break the law; it's a plan that allows them to drive with a peace of mind without getting a speed ticket for passing another camera set up. It has been proven that camera detectors actually improve safety for drivers.
Safety tip of the day: first things first using caution at intersections with traffic signals will prevent accidents. If you are the first car in line; when the light turns green you could easily be involved in an accident with a car running the red signal.

The One Sensible Way To Reduce Traffic Fatalities...
No holds barred Texas hands out plenty of moving violations(I ought to know I was thrown in jail there, for on minor violation) , this is done every day to continually supply the educational system responsible for the improvements. Remember to maintain the proper distance... stay one car length back for every 10 miles per hour of speed... or maintain a 2 second interval between you and the car in front of you. This can be measured by watching a spot on the road and counting... one one thousand, two one thousand...

What You Should Know About Stimulants...
Like anyone on the open road, long work weeks due to an voluminous retirement plan, and an active lifestyle, I could really use more pep. Something that doesn't just keep me awake (like coffee does) but allows me to fire on all cylinders. Especially when I want to go hard on my exercise bike.
Let's talk about survival. Did you know driving while fatigued is as dangerous as driving while impaired. The long and short of it: driving while fatigued can leave you feeling tired, cramped... and frustrated.
Historically there's been no magic energy pill. Coffee, it turns out that caffeine doesn't really energize you. What it does do is stimulate the central nervous system, by preventing the nucleo-side adenosine from bonding with it's receptor in the brain, but there's no actual energy boost... just a smoke and mirrors effect.
Then there's the multibillion-dollar energy drink industry. But the only "energy" in Red Bull, Rockstar, Monster, and the like comes courtesy of caffeine and the 50-50 blend of sucrose and glucose. These two sugars are worse than caffeine at giving you a lift. They deliver ugly side effects (it's like a nail in the coffin) , like yo-yo energy levels and belly fat. Even worse, they are linked to diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
But there is an antioxidant endorsed by none other than Lance Armstrong that will boost your energy... it works so well researchers believe it is sure to get banned. It's called FRS which stands for Free Radical Scavenger--- it's used among elite cyclists for the perceived energy boost it gives.
Will I try it? Right now, yes... because I'm the average guy who works hard for a living... who is willing to trade a few dollars for a chance to survive.

Figure it out, stay off the beaten tracks of mass tourism. I have high quality information because I'm a trucker. The information I provide is absolutely my sole opinion. Should You Consider Visiting A Small Town
"Hey look up, check it out, that sign says Farmville."
"Yeah, mmmeh heh, and that curve in the road could land us in the ditch, so slow down!"
"Whoa... this is the best road trip ever."
What my idiot friend and I didn't appreciate after swerving along local winding roads, was falling through the cracks and being another over-the-road casualty... such accidental factors isn't contained to just one place and time.
My co-driver and I, we live on the busy highways, trucking to make an weekly paycheck. And while I love the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Sometimes I want to get away. There's something about being in a small town that's relaxing--- figure it out less traffic, people are more friendly, less crime, a few reasons small towns are great for vacations.
When we arrived in Farmville, I was filled with the thrill of expectation. Like colorful showey sunsets, evenings enjoying what the locals enjoyed, wildlife viewing and excellent foods. There are many farms brimming with fresh produce, homemade country sausages, melons, grits, flowers and honey. It's a King's ransom... fields of cotton abound in the Fall... with fodder providing feed for the animals. Plus, the ponds and wildlife provide an excellent opportunity for photographers... It's more than what meets the eye, even the wildlife seems to be at peace.
Safety tip: using cruise control during inclement weather can be dangerous. The constant speed can increase the chance of hydroplanning and losing control. Use your cruise control only when the roadways are dry and clean, never during rainy or icy conditions. Never use your cruise control in city or congested traffic, the decreased control of your vehicle could contribute to an accident. Highway friend I know you've heard it before, but I'm not going to stop saying it... the tires on your vehicle are the one single link to the road surface. You see, it's simply that I'm very conscious of the fact that in all likelihood... all the safegaurds installed on your vehicle don't stand a prayer without good tires. Wake up call! No matter how powerful your enging, the highway can deal a deadly blow without the proper tires. It's really a bit strange but that's just how the operation of the motor vehicle is.

The Truth About Haulling And Money Sucking...
Fellow highway cruisers, there are many "hidden" dark consequences to making big bucks on the open highways, or anywhere else in life.
A money-making system for the average person is like a buried treasure, the treasure has been hidden from the world for too long. The need for it now is too great in this age of sudden and unpredictable job losses. There are pains hassles and nightmares you cannot even begin to imagine.
Here's an example: I had a co-driver along beside me when I was an over the road driver. Sounds like a cool job right? Well, we got caught by the"strings attached" syndrome. It'll make tiny tears come into your mind. We traveled a lot on the open highways. Which is why we risked our lives driving down voluminous mountains in the dangerous rains; driving into a blinding sun while crossing the Mississippi Bridge; one more, crossing the great plains while covered with snow and ice. Yawn.
So we would go off for two weeks to strange locations... and work all day and night, seven days a week. We never got to see anything, we never talked to anybody but bored folks on the job... we came home feeling like waste and had no life there either, because we were scheduled to depart again in two days.
But fellow cruisers, the gig paid to well to quit---we earned enough to survive, a fair benefit package, and in all likelyhood enough work to last until retirement. And we were the most miserable guys in town. Hated what we did. Hated not having a life. Hated living in a dingy simi-truck. Hated the scenes we were part of created by being on the road. We were caught by "strings attached".
Everybody say it, but few understand life really is short. Even if you live to be 100 or more, it's not enough time... with this expression in your realm of awareness... unleash your human potential that has always been bound up inside you. If you do you'll discover my words here are not just words. You'll discover how real my words are and how much money-making power you posses.
The great thing about this economy is that--- with the right tools, skills, and information--- it is possible to make a fortune out of any market you choose.
You stumbled into it, made choices, or allowed other people to steer you along. Just think about it. We get lulled into believing there's always plenty of time. Sorry there isn't.
